UT Drone Inspection on chimney at PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia
Project Background
A chimney is one of the critical assets at an industrial facility. It carries gas out of the production process. As a cement producer, SBI has a chimney as part of its production system. Its height, extreme temperatures, weather, and the operating environment require user to conduct regular inspections.
SBI entrusted PT Suprabakti Mandiri to carry out chimney UT drone inspection on the wall thickness of Stack 424-3K1 using Voliro T, to get efficient condition data from hard-to-reach areas without disrupting operations.
Project Execution
Preparation and Calibration
Before the inspection began, the team prepared all equipment. This included checking the Voliro T drone, controller, batteries, the sensor system (UT and EMAT payloads), and other supporting devices. The payloads were then calibrated using a calibration block to verify measurement accuracy. Once calibration was complete, the team verified the system and inspection parameters before starting data collection in the field.
Inspection Process
Once preparation was complete, the Voliro T drone flew to the predetermined measurement points on the chimney surface. With contact inspection capability and an omnidirectional ability, the drone measured material thickness directly, including in areas that could not be reached by conventional methods. The drone operated for 10 to 14 minutes per battery, in wind conditions of 6 to 10 m/s. Every measurement was recorded and documented throughout the inspection.
Data Collection Process
After all inspection points were covered, the material thickness measurements and visual documentation were collected and reviewed, to confirm the data was complete at every point. The results were then compiled into the inspection report, to support evaluation of the chimney's condition and planning for follow up maintenance.
Inspection Results
The Chimney Drone Inspection produced thickness data at every measurement point. Every thickness sample measured was well within the critical limit, confirming the chimney is in good condition. This data was compiled into the inspection report as the basis for evaluating the chimney's condition, and to support decisions on future inspection planning and asset maintenance.
