Berthing Aid System Project

Project Background

The Tanjung Jati B Unit 5 & 6 expansion project is designed to add a 2 x 1,000 Megawatt net capacity and will use sub-bituminous coal sourced from Kalimantan. New auxiliary infrastructure is constructed to ensure smooth and continuous operation, including a coal unloading jetty and a seawater intake system.

Coal will be delivered by vessels to the unloading jetty, which will be equipped with two ship unloaders and a conveyor system to transport coal to the coal yard. This yard will support 45 days of operation at an 80% capacity factor. The coal is subsequently conveyed to the power plant for combustion, which drives the turbines connected to the generators. Continuous cooling of the turbines is achieved through a seawater intake system that pumps in seawater.

Previously, the jetty did not have a Berthing Aid System (BAS), making docking operations at Jetty 5 & 6 more challenging and time-consuming. Compliance with the safety regulations for berthing procedures (PROTAP Pemanduan & Penundaan Kapal di perairan Wajib Pandu Tersus) requires the implementation of a reliable BAS to enhance operational safety and efficiency.

Project Objectives

Captains of large cargo ships must navigate narrow channels, avoid collisions, and deal with unpredictable weather conditions for safe and efficient berthing. Implementing a Berthing Aid System provides real-time data on vessel positioning and orientation.

This system detects distances to the jetty and obstacles, accounts for wind speed, direction, currents, and other environmental factors, and issues visual and audio alerts when corrective action is needed.

A reliable BAS minimizes the risk of accidents and delays, reducing both fuel consumption and operational costs. PT Bhumi Jepara Service appointed Suprabakti to supply and install Prosertek’s BAS, leveraging its advanced technology to meet these requirements.

Project Execution

The Coal Unloading Jetty Units 5 & 6 is equipped with Berthing Aid System (BAS) designed to provide real-time data on berthing speed, angle, and distance to the vessel’s berthing line.

Project Outcomes

Before BAS Implementation (Left picture), Berthing needed more data on distance, angle, speed, wave, tide, and wind, leading to longer berthing times, higher fuel costs, and compromised safety.

After BAS Implementation (Right picture), Real-time data availability improved efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, and enhanced safety, aligning with the safety regulations and operational goals.
